Essie Winter 2012 collection: Brooch the Subject and Size Matters swatches and review

It's winter here in the land down under so it's the perfect time to break out some gorgeous wintery shades! Today I have my swatches and review of two of the shades from the Essie Winter 2012 collection - Brooch the Subject and Size Matter.

What they say:

"The newest colour collection from Essie is all about Cocktail Bling! Every Essie girl likes to dress up during the holidays and there is no time like the present to adorn yourself with fabulous colour! The collection is inspired by the precious stones and metals that we love to accessorize ourselves with at holiday cocktail parties - think Rubies, Sapphires and Emeralds, oh my!

The winter 2012 collection consists of six luminous shades that evoke the beguiling beauty of the world of gems, which are sure to cause a sensation."

Brooch the Subject is a creamy beige creme. Very work appropriate and a little ummmm boring for me actually. This would be a great base for some black lacy nail art though! 2 coats is pictured.

Size Matters is a stunning racy darkened red creme. I love these types of reds! My camera didn't want to capture the colour properly so I've had to tweak the photo slightly. A great go to glossy red polish. 2 coats if pictured but it's super opaque so if you're careful you can get away with 1 coat.

Overall: I found the formula of these two shades thinner than the usual Essie formula which made it a bit trickier for me to apply. I had to redo my swatch for Brooch the Subject as I flooded my cuticles and had to be super careful 2nd time around. However, they were perfectly opaque in 2 coats each and dried quickly to the Essie high gloss finish that I love. Every time I swatch Essie shades you can see my big head reflected HAHA! The brush was great to use as well.

The shades in the collection are a good mix of colours but not necessarily ones you'd expect from a Winter collection. I would have loved to see more vampy colours but Brooch the Subject and Size Matters are fantastic staples in any polish collection! You can never go wrong with a vampy red or nude ;)

Details: The Essie Winter 2012 collection is available now from Myer and selected salons nationally for $18.95 per full size polish and $25.00 for a mini polish 4 pack.

  1. Size matters seems a lovely winter red colour, but I am not a fan of beige so I don't really like the other one.

    1. Beige shades are definitely not for everyone don't worry. It took me a long time to warm up to wearing beige!

    1. I agree - Brooch the Subject isn't the most groundbreaking shade unfortunately especially for a winter collection.

  3. I don't like Essie's formula. I tried different finishes but none of them are good.

    1. That's disappointing to hear Katherine. I know a lot of the older Essie polishes have tricky formulas and also Essie has a lot of lighter shades which are so much harder to apply. I find their forumla has come a LONG way since I 1st became obsessed with polish.

  8. Lovely colours but not very unique (even for essie). The red looks great against your skintone though Chelle.

    1. Yeah these definitely aren't earth shattering shades I'm afraid. Especially for a winter collection when there are so many vampy and dark shades one could do!
